How Popular Will Google + Brand Pages Be? Better submit your application now...

Although Google + is still more mirage than reality for most people, companies that have been coasting along on the assumption they had some time to decide how to deal with this latest social network have found the clock has dramatically sped up. Google has set up an application page where firms can apply to become part of its initial test phase for business pages, according to Ad Age - and the response has been overwhelming.

Already some companies, such as Ford, have set up hacked pages with impressive early results. "They're doing to some incredibly cool stuff like the "hangout" they're doing this afternoon with their customers,” Christian Oestlien, the lead product manager for social advertising at Google told Ad Age. “It's the kind of stuff we're looking to test."

For search, this means another change as social content continues to upend the rules. Already it is speculated that Web pages with a large number of links may not be as important as the number of "likes" received in SEO.
Given the intense interest in Google + it is fair to wonder how quickly of an impact it might have. New statistics from  BrightEdge on the Google +1 button suggest it could be significant - and fairly soon too. An analysis of the front pages of the Web's 10,000 largest sites shows a 33 percent spike in placement of the new Google +1 button in just the last few weeks. The report also shows that Facebook still enjoys a two-to-one lead in plug-in placement on these large sites over competing social networks and overall Facebook is still the preferred social media platform for larger companies with more than 47 percent of sites linking to the network.

Onderzoek: The Socialisation of Brands

Enkele belangrijke quotes: "When Wave started as a project in 2006 we were aware that there was much debate but few facts behind the social media phenomenon. Therefore we initiated Wave with the aim of measuring the scale and impact of social media across the globe. In this time, we have researched more than 95,300 internet users in 59 countries and, if Wave has taught us anything, it is that social media stands up to the hype."

"Social networks are becoming powerful hubs of interconnected communities but it’s not just people that are connecting in the social media space. There is huge demand for a more social and interactive relationships with brands."

"Almost half of the Active Internet Universe has already joined a brand community. These communities are also clearly having a huge benefit to the brands involved, driving brand loyalty, endorsement and sales."
